The real Aikido training is Uke (attacker),through Ukemi to practice techniques and understand its purposes, this is the way to learn the spirit of Aikido.
Wushaolin.James Feng
------------------------------------------------------------------------
Lots of Aikido master has been trying to convey the same things, while study and observing most Aikido master’s journey,we can see a common thing that they were excellent Uke.
Humbly receiving techniques and force from their teacher,in the meantime guiding their training partner into correct training principle, years of experiencing and learning acquired aikido principle,it became a matter of when to become a true Aikidoka.
In Aikido training,Tori side (receiver) learned practical techniques,Uke side trained body strength, flexibility and reflex.
During training,Uke will learn his\her body structure, and use correct body movement to stabilize his\her balance, hence it is always a two person’s job in aikido training, through connection and harmonize with each other in order to explore Aiki spirit.
A good Uke (attacker) should preform follow tasks correctly
First, as an attacker
In Aikido training,
Uke will perform two types of attack, the direct attacks are focused strikes: Shomen Uchi, Yokomen Uchi, Tsuki, and simulating sword forms’ attacks.
Indirect attacks are katatedori, ryotedori…etc, by grabbing the opponent then following up with attacks.
Correct attacks and strength will allow both side training effectively.
Attack randomly will sabotage receiver’s rhythm and motion during training situation,
the efficiency of training will be limited, which we should avoid during practicing mode of training.
Second, Ukemi
Ukemi techniques aim to encounter receiver’s (Tori side's) technique and reflex, and protect self not to be injured.
A good Ukemi techniques include correct body movements.
Been joint locked and attacked situation oneself should not only maintain balance but also harmonize receiver’s feedback.
If Uke side only use resisting force to practice during training, then it will lead to a muscle competition,
it could easily hurt each other, and Tori side won’t even receive correct experience and information regards force of direction.
A good Uke should understand the purpose of Ukemi, and use it to guide correct movement of Tori Side,in the meantime oneself can also receive proper training.
Third, having the ability to fight back
This training should only start when Tori side has a basic understanding of oneself’s techniques and strength.
During performing techniques in practice,Uke side not only protect and balance him/herself,but also having the ability to discover the opportunity to show an intention of fighting back.
It is only to show the intention but not to physically fight back, then both side will practice with caution and holds alert to complete real Aikido Training.
(When both side agreed to fight back, it is valuable to tempt, it might be efficient or not. but this is real martial art training isn’t it?)
Fourth, precisely understand Tori side’s intention and strength
Moving first or after?
both are movement, the difficulties are to hold his/her ground before opponent’s attack,in every Ukemi practice, not only body strength and reflex but also learning to understand opponent’s intent.
Through years of Ukemi training also gaining the experiences of Tori side’s forces and directions, further develop the ability to see the opponent’s intention,
so that being able to move at right space and timing, such abilities will allow you to have an accurate judgment during complex situation, and then make the right decisions in an instant.
Fifth, from Uke side to Tori Side
A perfect Uke side will layout a best situation for himself/herself,through Ukemi techniques and eventually guide or induce the opponent into his/her own field.
Reverse the situation to favor himself/herself before the opponent holds his/her own ground, this is main reason to practice Ukemi techniques, hence either Tori side or Uke side, the control of the situation is all on yourself.
To be a great Aikidoka,
must perfect Uke side, through Ukemi practice to train physical body and reflex, but also using the force to perform on the techniques.
Therefore, Aikido is always a two person’s training, the correct Ukemi techniques guide Tori side’s improvement, and on the other hand the correct Tori side’s techniques train Uke side’s body and mind.
Tori and Uke training together towards a way of inner peace.

(UKE/UKEMI)
